Do suction-cup cat perches actually hold?

Do suction-cup cat perches actually hold?

Suction cups hold by sealing against the glass so air pressure pushes them on. They work well when the seal is good, and fail when something breaks it. Almost every fall comes down to the glass, the cups or the fitting.

The short answer

A well-made suction perch, fitted to suitable glass the right way and checked regularly, is a practical everyday cat bed. We don't publish our own load figures. Where a supplier states a limit we show it on the product page as the maker's figure, and we always say to test by hand before your cat uses it.

Why suction cups let go

  • The wrong surface. Tinted film, frosted, textured, leadlight or painted glass has tiny channels air can leak through. So does the frame or a join between panes.
  • Dirt and grease. An invisible film, including cleaning-spray residue, stops a proper seal.
  • Cold. Cold rubber is stiffer and seals less well. Re-press cups after a cold snap.
  • Heat and sun. Strong sun on old rubber can make it go hard or cloudy over time.
  • Old cups. Cups that are stiff, cloudy or misshapen should be replaced.
  • Sideways jumps. A cat launching on from an angle loads the cups unevenly. Fit the perch where your cat can step on from below, like a sill, chair or steps.

The fitting routine

  1. Clean the glass with warm soapy water, rinse, and dry with a lint-free cloth. Skip glass sprays, which can leave a film.
  2. Warm the cups in warm (not boiling) water for a few minutes, then dry them.
  3. Press from the centre out, firmly, until each cup is flat with no air bubbles. Tighten any cup knobs or levers.
  4. Load-test with your hand, pressing down hard in the middle and the front edge.
  5. Supervise the first few sessions.

Ongoing checks

  • Weekly: look at each cup. Any that have crept or show air under the rim, remove, clean and re-fit.
  • After cold nights or very hot days: re-press every cup.
  • Every few months: re-clean the glass and cups.
  • Any time a cup looks hard or cloudy: replace it.

If your glass won't work

If your windows have film, texture or no flat pane big enough, fit a wall-mounted perch beside the window instead. The Wall-Mounted Cat Hammock and Cat Wall Set screw into studs or solid masonry. Read our cat wall setup guide first.

Frequently asked questions

Do suction cup cat perches work on all windows?

No. They need smooth, flat, clean glass. Tinted film, frosted, textured or leadlight glass and window frames won't hold a seal.

Why does my cat perch keep falling?

Usually dirty glass, cold or old cups, or the wrong surface. Clean the glass and cups, warm the cups, re-press them firmly and check them weekly.

How often should I check the suction cups?

Look at them weekly and re-press after cold or very hot weather. Replace any cup that's gone hard, cloudy or misshapen.

How much weight can a suction cat perch hold?

It depends on the product. Use the maker's stated limit on the product page as a guide, and always test by hand before your cat uses it.
