Buying guide

How to choose a window bird feeder.

A window feeder fixes to the outside of your glass with suction cups, so birds feed a hand-span from where you sit. It's the closest view of backyard birds you can get without disturbing them, and it works in flats and apartments as well as houses.

What to look for

  • Clear acrylic all round. Clear walls and roof mean nothing blocks the view, from inside or out.
  • Three or more suction cups. More cups spread the load. Ours use three on the Classic, and you can replace them when they age.
  • A lift-out tray. You'll clean it every week or two, so it should come out easily.
  • A sensible size. Small trays empty faster but stay cleaner. Fill little and often.

Where to put it

Choose a window you actually sit near, on clean, smooth glass, ideally with a tree or shrub within a few metres for birds to dart back to. A feeder fixed right on the glass is also one of the safest places for one, because birds leaving it can't build up speed toward the window. More on feeders and window strikes.

Good questions

Asked & answered.

Do birds actually use window feeders?

Yes. Birds can take anywhere from a few days to a few weeks to find a new feeder. A little seed scattered on the tray and nearby cover help them discover it sooner. We can't promise who'll visit, or when: birds are wild.

Will a window feeder fall off?

Not if the glass is clean and dry and the cups are warmed and pressed firmly. Cold glass weakens suction, so re-press after a cold snap. If it ever falls, our guarantee replaces it.

Can I use a window feeder in an apartment?

Yes, as long as you can reach the outside of the glass safely to fit and refill it. Many people use them on balcony doors and kitchen windows.
